The original Earth Day celebration, on April 22, 1970, was organized in response to a disaster off our coast. In 1969, an oil platform’s spill in the Santa Barbara Channel created an 800 square mile slick, from Santa Barbara to Ventura County, and the resulting environmental destruction inspired Sen. Gaylord Nelson, from Wisconsin, and Denis Hayes, a 25-year-old activist, to create an annual event calling attention to environmental threats.
Earth Day is now commemorated every April 22, and organizers of events worldwide raise awareness of environmental threats while celebrating environmental progress. Below are some upcoming local events.
